How tipping works
A tip is a percentage of the bill added as a gratuity. To find the tip, multiply the bill by the tip rate. Divide the total (bill + tip) by the number of people to get the per-person share.
Enter the bill, tip percentage, and the number of people to split the cost.

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100, then divide the bill plus tip by the number of people. Example: a $50 bill with a 15% tip split between 2 people gives a tip of $7.50, a total of $57.50, and $28.75 per person.
| Bill | Tip % | People | Tip amount | Total | Per person |

In the United States, 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is typical for restaurant service, with 20% common for excellent service. Some cities and countries have different customs, and tipping is not expected everywhere.
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common practice, though tipping on the full total including tax is also common and simply results in a slightly larger tip. This calculator treats whatever amount you enter as the bill amount to tip on.
This calculator divides the total evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share of the bill first, then apply the same tip percentage to each share individually.
Some restaurants automatically add an 18-20% gratuity for large parties, often six or more people, listed on the receipt as an included service charge. Check your receipt before adding an additional tip.
This calculator assumes an even split among all people entered and a single flat tip percentage. For itemized bills, unequal splits, or automatic gratuities already included on the receipt, adjust the bill amount accordingly before calculating.
