How hourly-to-salary conversion works

To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply the hourly rate by hours worked per week, then multiply by the number of weeks worked per year. The standard full-time assumption is 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, but you can lower the weeks figure to account for unpaid leave or a shorter work year.

Once you have the annual figure, monthly pay is annual divided by 12, weekly pay is hourly rate times hours per week, and daily pay assumes a 5-day work week (weekly pay divided by 5). These are gross figures before taxes and deductions.

How do I convert an hourly wage to a salary?

To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply the hourly rate by hours worked per week, then by the number of weeks worked per year. Example: $25/hour at 40 hours/week for 52 weeks is $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 per year.

Steps to convert hourly pay to salary

  1. Multiply the hourly rate by hours worked per week to get weekly pay ($25 × 40 = $1,000).
  2. Multiply weekly pay by the number of weeks worked per year to get annual salary ($1,000 × 52 = $52,000).
  3. Divide the annual salary by 12 to get monthly pay ($52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33).
  4. Divide weekly pay by 5 (a standard 5-day work week) to get daily pay ($1,000 ÷ 5 = $200).
  5. Lower the weeks-per-year figure below 52 to account for unpaid leave, reducing all the figures above proportionally.

Hourly-to-salary formulas

Annual = Hourly × Hours/week × Weeks/year · Monthly = Annual ÷ 12 · Weekly = Hourly × Hours/week · Daily = Weekly ÷ 5
  • Hourly = the wage paid per hour worked
  • Hours/week = the number of hours worked in a typical week, 40 for standard full-time
  • Weeks/year = weeks actually worked in the year; use less than 52 to subtract unpaid time off

Frequently asked questions

Is this a gross or net salary figure?

Gross. The result shown is total pay before income tax, payroll tax, or any other deductions are subtracted, matching how hourly wages are usually advertised in job listings.

What if I don't work exactly 40 hours a week?

Enter your actual average hours per week — the calculation scales linearly, so 30 hours per week at the same hourly rate produces exactly 75% of the 40-hour annual figure.

How do I account for unpaid vacation or unpaid leave?

Lower the weeks-worked-per-year field below 52. For example, two weeks of unpaid leave means entering 50 weeks instead of 52, which reduces the annual, monthly, and weekly figures proportionally.

Why is the daily figure based on 5 days instead of 7?

The daily figure assumes a standard 5-day work week, since that is how weekly hours are typically distributed for salaried and hourly employees; if your schedule differs, divide your weekly pay by your actual number of working days instead.

This calculator assumes a constant hourly rate and evenly distributed hours; it does not account for overtime pay, bonuses, paid time off, taxes, or benefits, all of which affect actual take-home pay.
