About clicks per second (CPS)

Clicks per second (CPS) is your total click count divided by the test duration. A short countdown gives you time to get ready, then the box tracks every click until the timer runs out.

CPS naturally varies with clicking technique (single-finger tapping versus jitter or butterfly clicking), mouse hardware, and practice. Your best score for the selected duration is saved only in your browser.

How is CPS (clicks per second) calculated?

CPS is calculated as your total number of clicks divided by the test duration in seconds: CPS = total clicks / duration. Example: 27 clicks in a 5-second test gives 5.4 CPS. A brief countdown before the active window starts gives you time to position your cursor before clicks are counted.

Steps to take the click speed test

  1. Choose a test duration of 1, 5 or 10 seconds.
  2. Click the box once to begin a short countdown.
  3. When the countdown ends and the box becomes active, click as many times as you can before time runs out.
  4. Your running click count and live CPS update after every click during the active window.
  5. When the duration ends, your final CPS is locked in and compared against your saved best for that duration.

CPS formula

CPS = total clicks / test duration (seconds)
  • Active window = the period after the countdown during which clicks are counted, matching your chosen duration
  • Countdown = a short preparation period before the active window begins; clicks during this period are not counted

General CPS reference ranges

RangeGeneral description
Under 4 CPSCommonly reported for a relaxed, single-finger clicking pace
4-7 CPSReported as a typical fast clicking pace for most people
7-10 CPSReported as a fast pace, often requiring practice or techniques like jitter clicking
Over 10 CPSReported mainly with specialized techniques such as butterfly clicking or drag clicking, or with software/hardware assistance

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a countdown before the test starts?

The countdown gives you time to position your mouse cursor over the click area and mentally prepare, so the first click counted is a real, intentional click rather than a rushed or accidental one caused by starting the timer instantly.

What are jitter clicking and butterfly clicking?

These are techniques some users practice to click faster than a normal single-finger tap: jitter clicking uses arm tension to vibrate a finger rapidly on the mouse button, while butterfly clicking alternates two fingers on the same button. Both can raise CPS but are harder to sustain accurately.

Does mouse hardware affect my CPS?

Yes. Some gaming mice have a lower click debounce time or a lighter switch actuation force, which can make rapid repeated clicks register more reliably than on a standard mouse, so comparing CPS across different mice is not entirely fair.

Is my click data sent anywhere or shared?

No. Your click count, CPS, and best score are all calculated and stored only in your browser's local storage; nothing is uploaded to a server.

This test measures raw click count within a fixed browser-timed window, which is affected by mouse hardware, click technique, and browser/OS input handling; treat CPS as a rough personal benchmark for tracking your own trend, not a precise or universally comparable measurement.
