How is annual leave calculated

Under 1 year of service earns 1 day per full month of perfect attendance, up to 11 days. At 1 year or more, leave starts at 15 days and gains 1 extra day for every 2 additional years of service (capped at 25), reaching 16 days in year 3.

This calculator applies only the general rule under Article 60 of the Labor Standards Act. It does not reflect fiscal-year-based grants, first-year proration, or more favorable terms some companies set by collective agreement — confirm your exact accrual with HR.

How is annual leave calculated

Under 1 year of service earns 1 day per full month of perfect attendance (up to 11 days); 1 year or more starts at 15 days and adds 1 day for every 2 additional years of service (capped at 25). Example: an employee in year 5 of service gets 15+floor((5-1)/2)=17 days.

Calculation steps

  1. Enter the hire date and a reference date (e.g. today).
  2. Compute the months or years of service between the two dates.
  3. Under 1 year: leave equals the number of fully attended months, up to 11 days.
  4. 1 year or more: leave equals 15 plus the floor of (years of service - 1) / 2, capped at 25 days.
  5. To calculate the payout, multiply the daily ordinary wage by the number of unused days.

Formula

under 1 year: months attended (max 11) · 1 year+: 15 + floor((years of service - 1) / 2), capped at 25
  • years of service = full years from hire date to reference date (rounded down)
  • leave payout = daily ordinary wage x unused leave days

Frequently asked questions

Do I get no leave in my first year?

You do — during the first year, you earn 1 day for each month of perfect attendance (up to 11 days), and a fresh 15 days is granted once you reach exactly 1 year of service.

What is the maximum number of leave days?

Leave grows by 1 day every 2 years of service and caps at 25 days; it does not increase further beyond that.

How is the leave payout calculated?

Multiply the daily ordinary wage by the number of unused leave days. Ordinary wage can include regular, uniformly-paid allowances beyond base pay, so calculate it precisely from the payslip.

Can fiscal-year-based leave grants give a different result than this calculator?

Yes. Many companies grant leave based on a fixed fiscal year (e.g. every January 1) instead of the hire-date anniversary, which changes how the first year and later years are calculated. This calculator applies only the hire-date-based general rule, so check your company's policy as well.
